How Do You Transfer Money from One Country to Another?
How do you transfer money from one country to another? You start by finding a foreign exchange company that offers currency exchange and international payments.
Every month we feature an edited video of an interview we’ve done with a topic expert on our YouTube channel. This month we speak with Ed Wiley, a New Zealander who works for OzForex in its Sydney, Australia headquarters.
OzForex is an Australian online foreign exchange and payments company that operates under a number of different territory-specific brands. The firm provides money transfer services to Travelex, MoneyGram and ING Direct, as well as to individual expats.
Ed says the role of a company like OzForex is to keep the banks honest. They do this by transmitting funds internationally to help expats move their money faster and cheaper and make their funds more readily available than banks.
“Banks do hide their fees within the margins,” Ed says. “If you transfer US$10,000 internationally, for example, you would probably get charged US$350 to US$400 in hidden fees. So we try to keep the banks honest.”
They do this by offering a lower cost, 24-hour-a-day global online solution that is easy to access and use. OzForex also has offices around the world in most English-speaking countries.
“The majority of our business comes from individuals,” he says. “We get everyone, from a person transferring their money from the U.K. because they now live in Australia to an expat who’s relocating internationally with a job.”
Although OzForex also partners with organizations to help them relocate their employees overseas, its core business is helping individuals and small-to- medium-size companies.
“When I say small-to-medium, I mean every day there’s a startup company somewhere in the world in need of receiving funds from another country,” Ed says. “As an example, an Australian-based company might have income in the U.S. and the U.K., but they’re going to have to bring that back into their home currency. We can help them do that in both a more convenient and cost-effective way.”
If you have questions about how to get your money from one country to another, Ed’s your man.
