Millennial Entrepreneurs Joining New American Expat Generation
The Expat Survey 2013 findings we published several weeks ago reconfirmed what we knew from our research and studies from others: there is a new American expat generation and it’s largely the Millennial Generation.
Millennials – mostly young people between the ages of 18 and 34 – are on the move abroad, looking for adventure. Stymied by the job market at home and tired of living with mom and pop, they make up the largest group of new expats.
But these adventurers aren’t just backpacking their way around the world. According to Entrepreneur magazine, “Indeed, 60 percent are turning their backs on the traditional career path and instead, consider themselves entrepreneurs, with ideas, capital and plans for startup endeavors. While the motivations for branching out into the world of entrepreneurship run the gamut, the No. 1 reason is freedom, followed by the ability to choose projects and unlimited income potential.”
If you’re a Millennial entrepreneur with a yen to see the world, you can read more about startup opportunities in our article, “Young American Entrepreneurs Abroad.” Our article, “Entrepreneurial Opportunities Abroad,” hones in on specific regions of the world and countries where entrepreneurial opportunities are the greatest.
If you don’t have an entrepreneurial bent, but want to join the new American expat generation, a great way to begin is through an internship program. Internships provide a way for younger people to test the waters of working abroad. A great source for finding internships is Global Placement. They offer internships in Europe, Asia, the Americas, Australia and Africa, as well as the U.S.
If India is your destination, guest blogger and adventurer Matt Wennersten has set up a business for intern candidates just for you. Called ConnectInc, the company places young professionals from the U.S. and the U.K. with top-tier Indian companies, for a small fee.
