Checklist 5 - Select Schools Before You Move Abroad

Select Schools Before You Move Abroad

If you are moving with children, you will need to research schools in your new city well in advance of your move. The U.S. embassy or consulates are good places to start for school recommendations. Also use local expat online forums to connect with families who have children in local schools. In most countries you will have three schooling options: state, international (or private) schools and homeschooling. Your choice will depend on the age of your children, your preferences, country requirements and, of course, your income, if you are considering expensive international (or private) schools

Younger children usually adapt quickly and may do well in a local state-supported school. Check to see if state-supported schools in your new city accept foreign students. If you have children nearing college, an international school using either the American or British systems may be a safer, but pricier choice. Homeschooling provides flexibility, but some countries may not allow you to homeschool your children.

Do not forget to request grade reports, test results and teacher evaluations from your current school before you move. You will need them for grade placement at your new school.

We provide detailed information in the Education section of each country. Also read our article “Selecting an International School” for more information.
