Identify and Organize Important Documents Before You Move Abroad

“Where do I begin my move abroad planning?” We hear this question often from first time adventurers moving abroad. It is the adventure that excites us, but a move to another country also can be a little scary when we contemplate all that needs to be done. To help take some of the stress out of your planning, we have put together a checklist that will help you organize your move abroad in advance.

Key documents you will need to enter, live and work in your new country should be your first priority:

  1. Visas (information is provided in the Immigration section of each country)
  2. Passports (be sure they are current for each family member)
  3. Proof of Citizenship (this is required if you are a naturalized citizen)
  4. Work Permits (information is provided in the Immigration section of each country)
  5. Immunization Certificates (information is provided in the Healthcare section of each country)
  6. Medical/Dental Records
  7. School Records/Diplomas
  8. Marriage Certificate
  9. Birth Certificates
  10. Social Security Cards
  11. Veterinary International Health Certificate (Information is provided in the Pet Regulations/Procedures section of each country)
  12. International Driver’s License (Call the American Automobile Association (AAA) at 1-800-922-8228 for information on how to apply)

Importantly, start as early as possible to assemble these key documents.
