Immigration & Customs
Entry Requirements
If you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or holder of a valid U.S. visa, you can travel to Mexico without a Mexican visa. You must have a valid passport and if applicable, a valid U.S. Resident Alien Card (Green Card) or U.S. visa. Minors must also travel with a valid passport. Minor children traveling alone or accompanied by only one parent or guardian must present a signed and notarized letter in Spanish certifying permission of both parents for travel to Mexico.
The FMM (Visitante) is a multiple immigration form for stays in Mexico of less than 180 days. It is primarily used for tourists and business travelers whose purpose is non-paid or non-profitable activities. You will be given an FMM form to complete on your plane, point of entry or at your destination airport. Visitors are not permitted to change their status (such as tourist to temporary resident) while in Mexico; application must be made at a consular office in your home country.
General Visa Requirements
If you are planning to work and/or live in Mexico temporarily or permanently you will need to apply for the appropriate visa at the nearest Mexican Consulate. U.S. citizens and residents planning to move to Mexico and live there whether by personal means, business or retirement must begin the process by completing a Mexican visa application, which you should download from the website of the Mexican Consulate nearest you and then apply in person. Original documents must be provided along with copies. Call to find out about hours, if an appointment will be necessary and for specific requirements, such as passport photos, payment of fees (usually cash only), proof of economic solvency and other requirements.
