Move to Germany

Immigration
Entry Requirements

You may enter Germany for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa. The 90-day period begins when you enter any of the Schengen group of countries (similar to the European Union). If you are traveling for any other purpose or if you intend to stay longer than 90 days or move to Germany permanently, you must obtain a residence permit or inquire about the appropriate visa at the German Embassy or a German Consulate in the United States. For further details about travel into and within Schengen countries, please see the Schengen fact sheet or the Schengen Map.

Permanent Residency

If you wish to stay in Germany for more than 90 days, you are required to obtain a Residence Permit and register at the local Standesamt – Einwohnermeldeamt (Registration Office) within one week of arrival. U.S. citizens may apply for their Residence Permit after entering Germany without a visa. Alternatively, they can apply for a Residence Permit prior to their move to Germany at the German Embassy in Washington or at a German Consulate. Inquiries may be made at the German Embassy.

The country generally issues Residence Permits for the purposes of employment, study or rejoining a family member already residing in Germany. Exceptions can be allowed, but usually are made at the discretion of immigration authorities.

Germany issues two types of Residence Permits: the limited Aufenthaltserlaubnis Permit and the unlimited Niederlassungserlaubnis Permit. The limited Aufenthaltserlaubnis Residence Permit carries an expiration date and is generally for those who are planning to stay longer than 90 days, but not long term. If you plan to move to Germany and stay long term, you can apply for the unlimited Settlement Permit after holding a Residence Permit for five years.
